Ozone Park Inferno: Red Cross Steps In After Devastating Queens Fire Displaces Families

QUEENS, N.Y. — A fast-moving fire tore through a residential building in Ozone Park early on Thursday morning, September 3, 2026 destroying homes and forcing over a dozen residents into the street. As emergency crews worked to extinguish the multi-alarm blaze, Greater New York Red Cross disaster teams stepped in to provide immediate shelter and relief to the displaced families.

The fire broke out in the early hours before dawn, igniting inside a multi-family home in the neighborhood. Heavy smoke quickly filled the corridors as residents scrambled to alert one another and evacuate.

Firefighters from the FDNY arrived within minutes to find heavy fire consuming multiple floors. Densely packed adjacent housing made containment a critical priority, prompting commanders to raise the alarm as crews stretched hose lines and conducted primary searches for trapped occupants. While the inferno charred much of the main structure and damaged neighboring properties, all occupants were successfully accounted for.

In the immediate aftermath, representatives from the American Red Cross met with affected residents on scene to offer emergency assistance.

"Our primary focus during a sudden disaster like this is ensuring every family has a safe place to sleep, food, clothing, and emotional support," a Red Cross spokesperson noted.

The organization is providing temporary hotel accommodations, financial relief cards for basic essentials, and disaster mental health counseling to help victims process the trauma of losing their homes. Sixteen people—including several children—are currently receiving casework assistance to navigate long-term housing recovery.

Building inspectors and FDNY marshals remain at the scene to assess structural stability and determine the precise cause of the fire. Community members and local organizers have also begun collecting clothing and essential items to support their displaced neighbors in the weeks ahead.

Local elected officials have pledged to coordinate with city housing agencies to ensure the displaced families receive expedited support, while fire officials remind residents across the borough to verify that their home smoke detectors are fully operational.
