VASCO, India — A devastating late-night fire swept through a prominent commercial market in Goa’s port town of Vasco, destroying more than 100 shops and leaving local shopkeepers with massive financial losses. Emergency services battled the fierce inferno for over four hours before bringing it under control. Miraculously, no injuries or casualties have been reported.
The fire erupted around midnight in the bustling market area, quickly spreading through tightly packed stalls and shops stocked with merchandise. Driven by combustible materials, the flames engulfed rows of businesses within minutes, sending thick plumes of smoke into the night sky and prompting panic among nearby residents.
Multiple fire tenders from across the region—including specialized firefighting units from the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Goa Shipyard Limited, and Mormugao Port Authority—were pressed into service to combat the blaze and prevent it from spreading further into neighboring residential zones.
Desperate shopkeepers rushed to the scene as news of the inferno spread, with many attempting to salvage inventory from the growing flames. The destruction comes as a crippling blow to local merchants who had heavily stocked their stores with goods ahead of the festive season. Initial estimates indicate losses running into tens of millions of rupees in destroyed inventory, structural damage, and lost livelihoods.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the disaster site alongside senior officials to assess the damage. Expressing sympathy for the affected vendors, the state government promised immediate financial assistance and relief measures to help business owners rebuild.
Local police and fire safety officials have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the ignition. Preliminary assessments suggest that an electrical short circuit in the market's aging wiring network may have triggered the blaze, though forensic teams are continuing to inspect the scene. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation into commercial safety compliance and infrastructure upgrades across the district.
