EU Fines AliExpress €550 Million Over Illegal and Counterfeit Goods

The European Commission fined AliExpress €550 million for not adequately assessing and mitigating risks from illegal, unsafe and counterfeit products, issuing what it called the largest penalty to date under the Digital Services Act. Investigators found examples of counterfeit goods, unsafe toys, and potentially dangerous cosmetics still available even after being flagged. The Commission said AliExpress overstated the effectiveness of its systems, lacked sufficient monitoring resources, and did not properly consider how recommendation and advertising tools could amplify visibility. AliExpress said it will review its options.
