Winnipeg Experiences Unseasonably Warm November

Key Highlights

  • Current temperatures in Winnipeg are 6 to 11 degrees above average.
  • October was the second-warmest in 80 years, with minimal frost days.
  • El Niño is driving the warmer weather patterns across the region.

In Winnipeg, the weather this week is defying seasonal expectations, with temperatures soaring well above the average for November. According to Environment Canada, daytime highs are expected to range from 6 to 11 degrees Celsius above the normal high of 3 degrees. This unusual warmth has been characterized by Dave Phillips, an emeritus climatologist, as a remarkable phenomenon for this time of year. "It's about as good as it could get," he remarked, reflecting on the pleasant conditions that have graced the city.

The warmth is not merely a fleeting occurrence but part of a broader trend that has marked the fall season. September and October both recorded temperatures significantly above average, with October being the second-warmest in the past 80 years. Daytime highs averaged about 4 degrees higher than normal, while overnight lows were 2 degrees warmer than typical. The first frost of the season, which usually arrives by late September, was delayed until October 16, and only eight days saw temperatures dip below freezing, compared to the usual sixteen.

Phillips attributes this extended warmth to the ongoing El Niño phenomenon. He noted that forecasts from various models—European, Canadian, and American—show a consensus on the warmer temperatures continuing. "I've never seen a map redder than this," he stated, emphasizing the certainty of the predictions. The models indicate that warmer-than-normal conditions are likely to persist, providing a reprieve from the harshness of winter.

The current weather offers a range of benefits for residents. People can enjoy long walks without the biting chill of wind, and outdoor tasks like garden cleanups can be postponed. This temporary warmth creates a sense of relief, as winter seems to be held at bay, at least for now. However, Phillips cautions against complacency, warning that the polar vortex could still bring cooler air into the region. "El Niño weather doesn't blow every day, and we'll get these maybe incursions of a little cooler weather, just to keep us honest," he explained.

Reflecting on historical weather patterns, Phillips pointed out that this unseasonably warm November contrasts sharply with the blizzard that struck Winnipeg in November 1986, which buried the city under 35 centimeters of snow. Such memories serve as a reminder of the potential severity of winter weather, making the current mild conditions feel almost surreal.

While the forecast does not guarantee that the warmth will last indefinitely, it assures residents that for the time being, they can expect milder days and less biting nights. For a city accustomed to the rigors of winter, this is a welcome gift, albeit a temporary one. As the season progresses, the cold will inevitably return, but for now, Winnipeg can enjoy this unexpected warmth.
