Where Allegiance and Ambition Part Ways

In politics, as in life, trust and certainty often travel together — and when one falters, the effects spread quietly but unmistakably through the institutions we rely on to reflect our choices. In Cardiff Bay this week, that quiet fracturing became visible when the Welsh Conservative group took the rare step of removing the whip from a senior member of its own ranks.

James Evans MS, the Member of the Senedd for Brecon and Radnorshire, was stripped of the Conservative whip and dismissed from his role in the shadow cabinet after Welsh Tory leader Darren Millar said he could no longer be sure of the MS’s loyalty to his party.

The action followed reports that Mr Evans had been engaging with representatives from Reform UK about the possibility of defecting to that party, despite having given personal assurances days earlier that he had rebuffed such an approach. Mr Millar said he expects every member of his group to be “100 per cent committed” to the Conservatives’ plans for Wales and that, regrettably, Evans had not met that standard.

In announcing the move, Mr Millar also removed Evans’s position as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, a post he had held since late 2024. With the whip withdrawn, Mr Evans now sits as an independent MS in the Senedd while he considers his political future.

The ousting comes amid broader tensions on the right of British politics. In recent days, other senior Conservatives in Westminster have either defected to Reform UK or been removed from their party roles over similar defections, reflecting deeper unease within the party about direction and leadership.

For his part, Mr Evans has said he has been uneasy with the direction of the UK Conservative Party at a national level, suggesting it no longer represents his values and beliefs. In a statement carried by local media, he described the decision as a “sad day” and spoke of the importance of free speech and criticism in politics.

Political observers note that the removal of a whip — essentially severing formal party ties within the chamber — is more than a procedural step. It signals internal anxiety about cohesion ahead of elections and underscores how individual choices can ripple through a party’s public face and parliamentary arithmetic.

For constituents in Brecon and Radnorshire, the change raises questions about representation and alignment in the run-up to the 2026 Senedd elections, as the spotlight turns not just to policy but to questions of belief, loyalty and political identity.

As Mr Evans reflects on his path forward, the Welsh Conservatives have reaffirmed their intention to maintain unity and clarity of purpose, even as they navigate an increasingly crowded right-of-centre political landscape.
