What If Efficiency Becomes The Next Bubble?

There is something almost poetic — or maybe just deeply ironic — about watching executives whisper both awe and dread at the same technology. AI is the star, the villain, the golden ticket, the time bomb. It has become the modern corporate Rorschach test — where the same inkblot reads as a breakthrough to some, and a collapse to others.

Oxford Economics surveyed companies around the world, and the split is fascinating. Roughly a third now say an AI-driven tech downturn is among the top macro threats looming over the system. There is fear that valuations have stretched beyond fundamentals, that too many chips, too many models, too many speculative bets are being piled on top of a fragile narrative. We’ve been here before — dot coms, crypto manias, SPAC seasons — the cycle is always the same: hype outruns utility, until reality pulls the cord.

And yet — almost a quarter of the same sample believes the opposite. They see AI as the new engine that will unlock future productivity growth and become the “real economy” driver. Not hype — but the world’s next energy source. They point to what is already happening in manufacturing scheduling, drug discovery, enterprise automation…and in those corners of the economy, the early returns look very real.

So the paradox is not that businesses are confused. The paradox is that both may be true at the same time. We could witness a speculative AI correction in markets, even as AI quietly becomes the most powerful productivity driver in actual business operations.

If both scenarios co-exist, then the future of the AI economy may feel less like flip-of-a-coin — and more like a split screen. The market side swinging; the real-economy side compounding.
