Under the Surface of Smoke — The Unexpected Danger Lurking in Long-Term Cannabis Use

A growing wave of emergency-room cases shows that long-term cannabis use can trigger cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome — a dangerous condition marked by cyclical vomiting, severe pain, and sometimes life-threatening complications.

Under the Surface of Smoke — The Unexpected Danger Lurking in Long-Term Cannabis Use

Soft afternoon light can feel comforting — until it doesn’t. For some, what began as an escape, a way to unwind or to dull pain, turns into a nightmare whose only recurring image is pain, panic, and the relentless turning of the stomach. Over time, regular cannabis use can morph into something far darker: a condition that medicine has only recently begun to accept in earnest.

This condition is Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) — a paradoxical illness that does exactly the opposite of what many expect cannabis to do. Instead of calm, it brings agony: unending nausea, crippling abdominal pain, and bouts of vomiting so severe that patients sometimes “scream and vomit at the same time,” a phenomenon now grimly nicknamed “scromiting.”

Long-term or frequent cannabis users, especially those who consume daily or at high potency, are most at risk. Researchers have documented a rising number of emergency-room visits tied to CHS — many patients previously misdiagnosed with food poisoning or stomach flu, until a pattern emerged: persistent vomiting, severe pain, dehydration, and weight loss.

One of the frightening aspects of CHS is its unpredictability. For some, episodes surface after years of use; for others, after extended periods of heavy consumption. During an episode, traditional nausea or stomach-ache remedies often do little — many sufferers report that the only temporary relief comes from hot showers or baths, a strange but common symptom linked to the syndrome.

Worse still: CHS is not always benign. In rare but documented cases, complications can be severe — including dehydration, kidney problems, heart rhythm issues, even seizures, and in extreme instances, death. Medical experts say that recognition of the syndrome has improved now that it has been formally classified and given an official diagnostic code, but many still warn the condition remains under-recognized and misunderstood.

For individuals and families, the lesson is sobering: what might start as recreational or medicinal use can — over time, and especially with frequent daily use — escalate into a severe health ordeal. Awareness and honest conversation matter. For those who experience recurring nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or find themselves inexplicably drawn to hot showers to ease symptoms — especially if a history of regular cannabis use exists — medical attention and reconsidering continued use may be not just advisable, but life-saving.

In simple terms: This “unusual symptom” — the screaming-while-vomiting or “scromiting” — may be the warning cry of a serious and potentially deadly condition tied to chronic cannabis use. It deserves attention, care, and, most importantly, a pause on assumptions that cannabis is always “safe.”
