Santiago, Chile—Fire crews battled a fast-moving residential fire in central Santiago early Sunday morning that claimed the lives of two residents and sent five others to local emergency rooms with severe burn and smoke inhalation injuries.
The alarm sounded at 3:40 a.m. when flames broke out on the second floor of a three-story multi-family housing complex. Heavy black smoke filled the single internal stairwell within minutes, blocking the primary escape route for upper-floor occupants.
More than eight fire companies responded to the three-alarm emergency, setting up ladder trucks on narrow residential streets to rescue trapped tenants from third-story windows. Firefighters fought their way into the interior corridors, encountering intense thermal pressure and collapsing ceiling plaster.
Rescue workers located two deceased adults inside a rear bedroom unit on the second floor. Medical teams treated five additional victims on the sidewalk before transporting them to regional trauma centers, where two remain in critical condition.
Municipal building inspectors noted that the timber-framed structure lacked central fire suppression systems and featured partitioned interior walls that accelerated the spread of heat. Local electrical grids in the district had experienced minor voltage fluctuations earlier in the evening.
"We woke up to people shouting from the upper windows while thick smoke poured out the front door," said neighbor Camila Rojas, who assisted arriving firefighters with ladder placement. "The fire moved through the wooden interior walls faster than anyone could run down the stairs."
Civil defense workers established a temporary shelter at a nearby municipal center to house twelve displaced families as power and gas utilities were cut across the immediate block. Water damage from firefighting efforts rendered adjacent structural units temporarily uninhabitable.
Arson investigators and municipal forensic experts remain inside the charred structure inspecting main electrical panels and heating units to determine the precise point of origin. Police cordons remain around the perimeter as structural engineers evaluate the risk of façade collapse.
