Abuja Residential Building Collapse Traps Multiple Occupants, Leaving Two Confirmed Dead

Abuja, Nigeria—Rescue teams deployed heavy hydraulic excavators and concrete cutters late Sunday afternoon to reach several residents trapped under a three-story residential building that collapsed in the nation's capital, killing at least two people.

The structural failure occurred around 11:30 a.m. in a high-density neighborhood, flattening the unreinforced concrete frame into a pile of twisted rebar and shattered masonry within seconds. Nearby residents reported hearing a sharp cracking sound along the ground-floor pillars before the upper floors caved in entirely.

First responders and volunteer workers pulled two unconscious victims from the immediate perimeter within the first hour of rescue efforts. Paramedics confirmed both individuals succumbed to crushing injuries before arriving at a nearby district hospital.

Search-and-rescue teams equipped with acoustic listening devices and sniffer dogs established a perimeter to localize signals from individuals trapped inside pockets formed by collapsed floor slabs. At least four people are believed to remain under the debris.

Building regulatory authorities noted that the structure had received multiple notices for unpermitted vertical extensions earlier this year. Preliminary structural assessments suggest low-grade cement mixtures and substandard steel reinforcement bars contributed directly to the structural failure.

"We felt the ground vibrate and then saw the roof fall straight into the ground level," said neighborhood resident Ibrahim Musa, who assisted initial digging efforts with shovels. "People were calling out from under the broken concrete slabs before the dust even settled."

Police units cordoned off surrounding access roads to allow heavy machinery, ambulances, and emergency logistics trucks unhindered movement through the congested neighborhood corridors. Gas supply lines and local electrical grids were cut across the immediate block to eliminate ignition risks.

Forensic engineers and municipal planning officials remain at the site logging structural samples and reviewing construction permits. Heavy cranes continue lifting primary support beams as emergency crews maintain continuous rescue operations into the evening.
