Tragic Hijacking: Somali Pirates Kill 5 Crew Members Aboard Hijacked Tanker

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — In a major escalation of maritime violence, Somali pirates killed five crew members aboard the hijacked petroleum products tanker MT Honour 25 before security forces freed the vessel, marking the first fatal pirate attack on commercial shipping off the Horn of Africa in over a decade.

The Palau-flagged vessel was intercepted in international waters while transiting near the Somali coast. Armed assailants boarded the ship and held its 17-member multinational crew hostage, prompting maritime security authorities and regional naval forces to track the vessel as it was forced toward regional waters.

The assault unfolded when maritime security units from Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland state launched a high-stakes rescue operation to retake the tanker. Officials reported that the pirates executed five crew members—identified as three Pakistani nationals, one citizen from Myanmar, and one from India—before military forces could fully secure the vessel. Four additional crew members sustained injuries during the raid before security teams neutralized the attackers and regained control of the ship.

Puntland regional authorities confirmed that the surviving crew members were brought ashore to receive medical treatment and emergency care. The identity of the pirate faction and the exact sequence of events leading up to the fatalities remain under active investigation by regional military officials and international maritime security analysts.

The deadly incident comes amid a notable resurgence in pirate activity along the busy trade corridors off the coast of Somalia and the western Indian Ocean. International shipping groups and maritime security experts have voiced deep concern over the escalating violence, urging international naval coalitions to reinforce patrols and protect merchant vessels operating in high-risk transit zones.

The attack has also sparked urgent calls for shipping companies to reassess security protocols when navigating vulnerable waters off the Horn of Africa. Maritime security advisers warn that as international naval assets remain stretched across multiple global hotspots, commercial vessels must re-evaluate their reliance on armed onboard security teams and strict adherence to recommended transit corridors to mitigate the threat of hijackings.
