HAFIZABAD, Pakistan — At least five people lost their lives and 27 others were injured after a passenger bus veered off course and plunged into a drainage canal in the Fatehki area of Pindi Bhattian tehsil, within Punjab’s Hafizabad district. Emergency teams responded swiftly to the site to extract victims and transfer the wounded to nearby medical facilities.
The passenger bus was en route from Raiwind to Chiniot when the accident occurred. According to preliminary reports from Rescue 1122, the vehicle lost stability as the driver navigated near a bridge over the drainage canal.
Rescue personnel suspect that excessive speed caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The bus skidded off the roadway, flipped over, and landed in the deep water-filled drain.
Upon receiving emergency alerts, specialized rescue teams rushed to the scene to pull survivors from the submerged wreckage. Rescuers provided immediate first aid on-site to mildly injured passengers while transporting at least 13 critically injured individuals to the Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital in Pindi Bhattian for urgent care.
Heavy machinery, including a heavy crane provided by local municipal authorities, was deployed to hoist the heavy bus out of the drainage ditch. It was under the overturned body of the bus that rescue workers located and recovered the deceased victims.
Local law enforcement and traffic authorities have launched a formal inquiry into the crash to determine whether mechanical failure or driver fatigue contributed alongside speeding. Search operations in the surrounding waters remained active for several hours to confirm no additional passengers were trapped or swept downstream.
The tragic incident adds to a troubling surge of severe road accidents across major highways in Punjab, drawing renewed calls from public safety advocates for stricter enforcement of speed limits, roadworthiness checks, and infrastructure upgrades along high-risk transit corridors.
District administration officials visited THQ Hospital in Pindi Bhattian to oversee medical operations, ensure free treatment for all survivors, and manage the handover of the deceased to grieving families. Provincial authorities expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and announced financial compensation packages for the families of the victims as well as those critically injured. Meanwhile, local community members gathered outside the medical facility to offer assistance to victims' relatives, emphasizing the pressing need for safety barriers along narrow canal bridges to prevent future tragedies.
