Tokyo Commuter Train Stabbing Leaves Two Hospitalized, Service Disrupted, Police Detain Suspect Immediately

Tokyo, Japan— Two passengers were stabbed inside a moving commuter train in Tokyo at around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, sending riders scrambling toward the front cars as the train pulled into the next station and police boarded.

The attack happened on a southbound service between Shinjuku and Shibuya. According to passengers, a man in his 30s began shouting near the door area and pulled a small kitchen knife from a bag. He lunged at the person closest to him. A second passenger who tried to intervene was cut across the arm and chest. The train operator was alerted via emergency intercom.

"The car went quiet, then someone screamed," said a 22-year-old university student who was in the adjacent carriage. "People pushed forward. The doors hadn't opened yet. It was tight. I could not move."

Tokyo Metropolitan Police officers were already on the platform for an unrelated patrol. They entered the car within 90 seconds of arrival. Witnesses said the suspect did not resist. He dropped the knife on the floor and sat down. The weapon was recovered and bagged. Blood was visible on two seats and a handrail.

The two victims, a man in his 50s and a man in his 20s, were taken to separate hospitals. Doctors described one wound as deep to the abdomen, requiring surgery. The other was listed as moderate. Neither injury was declared life-threatening by midnight. Police said the suspect and victims did not know each other.

The train operator, Tokyu Corporation, halted all services on the line for nearly two hours. Four trains were stopped between stations. About 1,200 passengers were guided along the tracks to the nearest exit by staff with flashlights. The company issued an apology for the delay and said it would cooperate fully.

Security footage from inside the train is now part of the investigation. Police are looking at whether the suspect boarded with intent. His bag contained no other weapons, but contained a handwritten note that investigators have not disclosed. A motive has not been established. Charges of attempted murder are being considered.

This is the fourth knife incident on Tokyo's rail network in the past 18 months. After previous attacks, operators increased camera coverage and added emergency alert buttons. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said Tuesday night it will convene a meeting with major operators this week to review current measures.

The suspect remains in custody at Shibuya Police Station. Questioning will continue Wednesday. The affected carriage remains sealed for forensic examination.
