Yokohama Port Cargo Crane Failure Crushes Dockworker, One Dead, Operations Halted For Inspection

Yokohama, Japan— A piece of cargo handling equipment collapsed at a container terminal in Yokohama at around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, crushing a dockworker under a steel spreader and killing him on the spot as co-workers looked on.

The victim was operating near Bay 3 of Honmoku Pier when a ship-to-shore gantry crane's twist-lock mechanism failed. The spreader, used to latch onto containers, dropped roughly 12 meters. It landed directly on the worker who had been guiding a 40-foot container into position. Port emergency teams declared him dead at 10:15 a.m.

According to two workers who were on the same shift, an audible alarm had sounded seconds before the drop. The crane operator attempted an emergency lock. The system did not hold. One witness said the cable snapped taut, then went loose. The container swayed and the spreader detached.

Yokohama City Fire Bureau and Yokohama Coast Guard both responded. The terminal was evacuated. All vessel loading was stopped. The area was cordoned off for forensic inspection. A heavy recovery crane was brought in to lift the spreader and recover the body, an operation that took more than an hour.

The deceased was a 38-year-old contract worker employed by a stevedoring subcontractor. He had worked at the port for six years. His name has not been released pending family notification. Colleagues described him as experienced and careful around heavy machinery. He leaves behind a wife and one child.

The Yokohama Labor Standards Inspection Office confirmed it has opened a formal investigation into industrial negligence. Investigators have taken the crane's maintenance history, operator certification records, and the subcontractor's safety training logs. Initial focus is on whether scheduled non-destructive testing of the twist-lock assembly was skipped.

"We have instructed the terminal operator to suspend all similar equipment until independent checks are completed," a labor bureau official said at a brief press conference. The port operator, Yokohama Port Corporation, said it would cooperate and cover costs for the inspection. It declined to comment on potential liability.

Union leaders for the All Japan Dockworkers Union arrived at the port by midday. They demanded a full audit of aging cargo equipment at Honmoku and Minami Honmoku. One organizer said workers have complained for months about delayed replacement of worn components due to budget constraints. The port authority denied that claim in a short statement.

The pier remains closed. No vessels are being loaded or unloaded in that zone. Investigators are expected to conduct a load test and metallurgical analysis of the failed component on Wednesday.
