UPPER GALILEE — A routine school field trip turned into a devastating tragedy on Monday after remnant unexploded ordnance (UXO) detonated along the Ramim Ridge in Northern Israel, leaving one person dead and roughly 20 students and teachers injured.
The explosion occurred during the early afternoon hours near Mitzpe Pe'er as a hiking group consisting of high school students, faculty chaperones, and supervisory guides traversed a scenic trail in the Upper Galilee. First responders reported that the blast was triggered when a member of the group inadvertently disturbed a concealed shell along the pathway.
Emergency medical personnel confirmed one fatality at the scene due to severe blast trauma. In addition to the fatal casualty, approximately 20 individuals—comprising students and accompanying teachers—sustained injuries ranging from minor shrapnel wounds and acute blast shock to moderate physical trauma. Due to the steep, rugged topography of the border region, military transport helicopters and Magen David Adom (MDA) mobile intensive care units were rapidly deployed to airlift the most severely wounded to nearby regional trauma centers.
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) units and bomb disposal teams quickly secured the immediate vicinity, halting all surrounding foot traffic to scan for additional hazards or secondary explosives.
Preliminary evaluations by EOD specialists suggest the device was an old piece of unexploded military ordnance buried shallowly in the soil from past border skirmishes. Rain-induced soil erosion along the trail likely exposed the hidden explosive, leaving it vulnerable to accidental detonation.
The fatal incident has spurred immediate outrage and calls for strict oversight regarding educational field trips in historical conflict zones. Municipal leadership and parent associations are demanding comprehensive sweeps of all designated hiking paths in northern perimeter districts.
Authorities have temporarily closed all off-road hiking routes across the Upper Galilee and Golan regions while EOD teams conduct safety inspections. Education and defense officials have issued a joint advisory instructing schools and tour operators to remain strictly on paved, designated roads until further notice.
