Disaster Strikes Historic Paris: Fire Sweeps Through Oldest Covered Food Market

PARIS — A devastating fire swept through the Marché des Enfants Rouges—the historic 17th-century landmark known as Paris’s oldest covered food market—engulfing several artisanal stalls, sending thick plumes of smoke over the Marais district, and triggering a major emergency response on Monday.

The fire broke out in the early afternoon inside the bustling covered market located on Rue de Bretagne. Fueled by wood-framed vendor stalls and stored culinary inventory, the flames spread rapidly across the interior structure before market vendors and patrons could fully evacuate.

More than 70 firefighters and dozens of specialized fire engines quickly cordoned off the historic Marais neighborhood to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent residential buildings. Emergency personnel successfully executed a mass evacuation of shoppers, staff, and local residents. Paramedics treated several individuals at the scene for minor smoke inhalation, and no severe casualties or fatalities were reported.

Established in 1615 during the reign of King Louis XIII, the March0é des Enfants Rouges is celebrated worldwide as a vital cultural symbol of Parisian gastronomy and daily community life. Famous for its diverse international food stalls, fresh produce, and historic timber architecture, the market had stood for over four centuries as a cornerstone of the 3rd arrondissement.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as shopkeepers scrambled to save inventory while thick grey smoke billowed through the market’s iron-and-glass roof. Entire vendor sections—ranging from popular Moroccan and Italian stalls to traditional French bistros—suffered severe fire and water damage.

Parisian authorities and police forensics units have launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the disaster. Early reports suggest an electrical fault or a kitchen appliance failure in one of the central food stalls may have triggered the inferno.

District leaders and city officials pledged full support to affected merchants and promised a comprehensive restoration plan once safety teams finish securing the historic premises. Mayor and heritage officials reassured the public that every effort will be made to preserve and rebuild the iconic landmark.
