AUBAGNE, FRANCE — A shocking act of violence shook a southern French community after a 14-year-old student opened fire with a hunting rifle inside a middle school near Marseille, injuring the headteacher and a staff member. The incident triggered an immediate lockdown, a massive emergency response, and nationwide concern over escalating youth violence.
The shooting unfolded inside a corridor at the Joseph Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, near Marseille. According to local authorities, the 14-year-old pupil entered the school grounds carrying the hunting rifle concealed inside a guitar case. He proceeded to fire shots toward the principal and a staff member before quick-thinking school personnel intervened.
A school supervisor bravely confronted and disarmed the teenager, preventing further casualties before police units arrived at the scene to take the suspect into custody.
Both injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency medical services. Local officials confirmed that while the headteacher and staff member suffered serious injuries, neither victim sustained life-threatening conditions. No other pupils were physically harmed during the incident.
High-ranking government officials, including the interior and education ministers, immediately traveled to the site to coordinate the emergency response and oversee the preliminary investigation.
"This unacceptable act is yet further evidence of the rise of unchecked violence in our society, against which we must all take a stand."— Edouard Geffray, French Education Minister
Police and prosecutors from Marseille have launched a full-scale inquiry to determine how the student managed to bring the weapon onto campus and what triggered the attack. Authorities noted that there was no immediate indication connecting the shooting to a recent wave of student protests and unrest affecting other schools across France.
As the community reels from the shock, local leaders and education authorities have pledged to review campus security measures and provide psychological support services to traumatized students and staff.
