Tragedy in Najran: Two Officers Killed in Saudi National Guard Helicopter Crash

NAJRAN, SAUDI ARABIA — Two officers of the Saudi Ministry of National Guard were killed when their Boeing AH-6i reconnaissance and attack helicopter crashed during a routine training mission in the southern province of Najran on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The crash occurred during a scheduled training flight over the southwestern border region of Najran. Official statements from the Ministry of National Guard confirmed that the light attack and reconnaissance aircraft encountered a catastrophic technical malfunction mid-flight, leading to the fatal impact.

Emergency rescue and medical teams were dispatched immediately to the crash site, but both officers on board succumbed to their injuries before they could be evacuated.

Official Statement: "An AH-6i helicopter belonging to the Ministry of National Guard crashed during a routine training mission in the Najran region due to a technical failure, resulting in the martyrdom of the pilot and his co-pilot."— Ministry of National Guard Spokesperson

The Ministry identified the deceased officers as a captain and a lieutenant serving within the National Guard's aviation wing. High-ranking military officials and government leaders offered their condolences to the families of the fallen officers, commending their dedication and service to the kingdom's defense forces.

The involved aircraft was a Boeing AH-6i light attack and reconnaissance helicopter, widely utilized by the Saudi Ministry of National Guard for tactical support and border monitoring. Recovery operations were completed shortly after the incident, and the site was cordoned off to facilitate field evidence collection. Additionally, military chaplains and family assistance teams have been deployed to support the officers' surviving families.

A specialized technical committee has been formed by the Saudi Ministry of National Guard Aviation Command to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Investigators will focus on analyzing flight data, maintenance records, and wreckage conditions to determine the precise nature of the technical failure that caused the downing of the aircraft. Operations at the regional aviation unit have been temporarily adjusted as safety inspections across the fleet get underway.
