Tragedy in Iowa: At Least 1 Dead After Train Smashes Into Semi-Truck

VICTOR, Iowa — A violent collision at a rural rail crossing in eastern Iowa on Wednesday afternoon has left one person dead and another critically injured. The impact triggered a massive derailment, mangling dozens of railcars and shutting down local transport infrastructure.

The crash occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, where a local state highway intersects with the Iowa Interstate Railroad tracks. The site is located in a rural stretch of Poweshiek County, approximately 70 miles east of Des Moines.

According to Poweshiek County Sheriff Matt Maschmann, an Iowa Interstate Railroad train struck a semi-truck directly at the highway crossing. The sheer force of the collision ripped the semi-truck apart and instantly derailed a significant portion of the train.

Authorities confirmed that one occupant of the semi-truck suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. A second individual was extracted from the wreckage and rushed to a nearby medical facility with "serious injuries."

The collision caused a domino effect down the tracks, causing 17 train cars and two power engines to derail. Emergency response footage captured a massive, chaotic heap of twisted metal and derailed cars, with thick plumes of dark smoke billowing into the afternoon sky.

Iowa Highway 21 remains completely blocked in both directions between Highway 6 and Old 6 Road as heavy equipment is brought in to clear the wreckage. The Iowa Interstate Railroad sustained "significant damage" that engineers expect will take days to repair.

Because of the size of the derailment and the rising smoke, specialized hazardous materials units were initially placed on alert. However, a subsequent evaluation by responding agencies offered a sigh of relief for the surrounding rural community.

Iowa State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Alex Dinkla confirmed that despite the severe structural damage to the engines and freight cars, no hazardous materials were spilled in the crash.

A joint investigation led by the Iowa State Patrol and local rail authorities is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, including why the semi-truck was positioned on the tracks as the train approached.
