Miracle in the Rockies: Elite Army 'Night Stalkers' Helicopter Down in Colorado Foothills, All Four Aboard Survive Unharmed

GILPIN COUNTY, Colo. — A U.S. Army MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter assigned to the elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), famously known as the "Night Stalkers," went down in the rugged mountain terrain of Colorado during a routine training flight. Despite the severity of the crash, emergency responders confirmed that all four crew members aboard survived without reported injuries.

The aircraft came down on the heavily wooded eastern slope of Thorodin Mountain, located in Gilpin County just north of Golden Gate Canyon State Park and west of Denver. First responders from local emergency agencies quickly accessed the crash site, confirming there was no post-impact fire or dangerous fuel leak surrounding the wreckage.

The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, headquartered out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, provides specialized helicopter aviation support for general special operations forces and international missions. The unit's pilots are renowned for operating in extreme flight conditions, high elevations, and night environments.

Military officials officially classified the incident as an "aviation mishap" occurring during routine high-altitude training maneuvers. Following the forced landing, the U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation Command immediately launched an active safety investigation to determine the potential mechanical or environmental factors involved. Meanwhile, local sheriff's deputies and mountain rescue teams coordinated closely with military personnel on site to secure the crash perimeter and assist in assessing the downed airframe.

Authorities commended the flight crew's skill and composure during the emergency landing, noting that their ability to safely set the twin-engine helicopter down in dense forest terrain prevented a potentially fatal catastrophe. The Army safety board remains on-site to inspect the aircraft before salvage efforts begin.

Though aerial photographs of the scene revealed substantial damage to the main rotor blades—which snapped near the rotor mast upon impact—the airframe itself remained largely intact. Military recovery teams are now tasked with the complex logisitcal operation of extracting the heavy, specialized aircraft from Thorodin Mountain's steep 10,000-foot slopes and dense timber terrain.

As the safety investigation gets underway, aviation experts highlight that high-altitude environmental conditions present unique demands for rotary-wing aircraft, making the crew’s safe emergency landing all the more remarkable given the unforgiving Front Range topography.
