Then comes the hygiene challenge. Airplanes aren’t dirty by default, but they’re shared spaces in the most literal sense — armrests, tray tables, touchscreens, seat belts, lavatory locks. Studies have found traces of bacteria and viruses on high-touch surfaces long after boarding. This doesn’t mean panic, but preparation: wash your hands often, use sanitizer before eating, and avoid touching your face mid-flight.

Dehydration is another silent passenger. Cabin air humidity typically sits below 20%, drying out skin and mucous membranes — your body’s first line of defense against infection. The solution is simple yet often ignored: hydrate before, during, and after the flight. One glass of water per hour in the air, even if it means more trips to the lavatory, can make a real difference.

Finally, movement. Long hours of sitting can slow circulation, particularly in the legs, leading to stiffness and in rare cases, deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Standing, stretching, or rotating your ankles every hour isn’t just good advice — it’s essential.

So, before the next boarding call tempts you skyward, pack more than your passport. Bring your water bottle, hand wipes, and a little mindfulness. The journey is as much about what you carry inside your body as what you check into the hold.
