Strike on Indian-Owned Pharma Giant: Russian Drone Attack Hits Kusum Group Plant in Ukraine, Leaving 1 Dead and Several Injured

SUMY, Ukraine — A major manufacturing facility belonging to the Indian-owned pharmaceutical entity Kusum Group was severely damaged in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region following a targeted Russian drone strike. Local authorities confirmed that the attack resulted in one fatality and left several other workers injured as heavy strikes struck the industrial complex.

Emergency services and firefighting units responded swiftly to the site, where a massive plume of dark smoke billowed from the burning main structure. Preliminary assessments indicate that the primary production unit was largely destroyed, with structural and equipment damages estimated at upwards of ₹400 crore ($48 million USD).

Founded by Indian national Rajeev Gupta, Kusum Group established its flagship Ukrainian manufacturing plant in Sumy in 2009. The facility had remarkably maintained active operations throughout the ongoing war, supplying essential generic medicines and critical healthcare supplies across Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Search and rescue personnel continue to sift through the rubble, while medical teams treat the injured employees evacuated from the blast zone.

"The main facility structure of the plant has been heavily damaged in the attack," noted an emergency responder at the scene. "Rescue operations and casualty verifications remain active as clearance teams inspect the affected zones."

The Kusum Group manufactures over 50 essential pharmaceutical products, primarily generics, and exports to more than nine nations, including Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and the Philippines. The direct hit on a prominent foreign-invested commercial health facility underscores the expanding impact of the conflict on civilian industrial infrastructure and global medical supply networks operating within Ukraine.

The attack highlights the escalating dangers faced by international businesses operating in Ukraine's active conflict zones, where civilian industrial sites increasingly bear the brunt of long-range aerial strikes. Industry observers warn that the destruction of key pharmaceutical infrastructure will likely intensify local medicine shortages and disrupt regional healthcare supply chains reliant on domestic generic production.
