Extreme Heat Warnings Extended Through Thursday

There is a particular unease that settles over a region when the heat does not break—when the temperatures that should have begun their autumn retreat instead climb higher, when the overnight hours offer no relief, and when the forecast extends not for days but for a week or more. In Southern California, that unease has arrived. More than 34 million people are under heat warnings or advisories, with extreme heat warnings in effect through Thursday evening for coastal and valley areas of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Orange counties, as well as San Diego .

The numbers behind the warning are striking. Temperatures are running 15 to 27 degrees above normal for early October, with highs forecast in the 90s to low 100s across the valleys and many coastal areas. On Saturday, at least eight Southern California cities broke daily high-temperature records. Santa Ana reached 107 degrees, Anaheim and San Diego both hit 105, and Vista reached 108—breaking a daily record and tying an all-time high set in 1985 . The heat is expected to persist through at least Thursday, with some relief possible by the following weekend .

What makes this heat wave particularly dangerous is its duration and its behavior at night. Warm overnight conditions provide little relief, compounding the cumulative stress on the human body. The National Weather Service warns of a high risk for heat illness, especially for the very young, the very old, those without air conditioning, and those who work outdoors . The hot, dry conditions have also raised wildfire concerns, with the Bouquet Fire in Los Angeles County and the Dome Fire in Mariposa County both burning as of Sunday .

Health officials have issued familiar but urgent advice: drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, check on relatives and neighbors, and limit outdoor activities to the early morning or evening. The heat wave is part of a broader pattern of extreme weather that has made 2026 a year of records and warnings. Across California, CAL FIRE has reported more than 5,700 wildfires and nearly 329,000 acres burned this year . The heat will eventually break. The pattern it represents will not.
