The U.S. State Department apologized after a map of Africa displayed during a presentation at the AIDS 2026 conference in Rio mislabeled countries, causing confusion among attendees. A Reuters review of footage showed the incorrect map appeared midway through a briefing on the department’s new health agreements, including that Nigeria was shown as landlocked and Mozambique moved to the Horn of Africa. The department said it took “full responsibility,” attributing the problem to a team member who hastily changed the slide deck before the event.
