Spanish Troops Clashed with Migrants in Violent Ceuta Border Incident

CEUTA, SPAIN — Four Spanish soldiers were injured after being ambushed and pelted with rocks by a group of migrants near the town of Benzú in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Authorities confirmed that twelve Moroccan nationals were arrested following a coordinated joint response by the National Police and Civil Guard.

The violent confrontation occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026 as military personnel were en route to a designated surveillance post near Benzú. According to law enforcement officials, a group of 30 to 40 individuals suddenly emerged from surrounding cover and surrounded the military vehicle. The assailants began hurling heavy stones at the transport, shattering windows and causing extensive damage to the vehicle.

Faced with escalating danger, the four soldiers abandoned the vehicle on foot to seek safety, triggering a pursuit toward the nearby Calamocarro area. The soldiers continued to suffer impacts from thrown stones during the pursuit, sustaining multiple contusions and minor injuries. The troops managed to place an emergency dispatch call, prompting a swift police response.

Upon the arrival of reinforcing police units, the group dispersed, with several suspects attempting to flee into the sea. Security forces launched a ground and maritime sweep, detaining twelve individuals. All four injured soldiers were subsequently transported to a local medical center for treatment, while the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard maintained sea patrols to locate remaining suspects.

The incident has sparked renewed debate among Spanish defense union representatives, who called for upgraded protective gear and armored transport vehicles for personnel deployed to high-risk perimeter posts along the border fence. Military staff associations pointed out that surveillance patrols frequently operate along isolated terrain near Benzú and Calamocarro, making transport units vulnerable to sudden mob ambushes during early morning border entry attempts.

Local government officials in Ceuta condemned the attack and commended the rapid response of the Civil Guard and National Police units that prevented further escalation. Meanwhile, Spanish interior ministry officials confirmed they are coordinating with Moroccan border control authorities to review joint security protocols along the perimeter fencing and trace any remaining suspects involved in the assault.
