Propeller Strike in Hong Kong: Diver Remains in Critical Condition Following Serious Coastal Incident

Hong Kong, China—A 27-year-old diver remains in hospital following a violent collision with a boat propeller in Clear Water Bay. The incident occurred on the afternoon of July 4, 2026, as a group of divers attempted to return to shore. An Amber Rainstorm Warning was in effect at the time, creating hazardous sea conditions near Little Palm Beach.

The victim was part of a group of at least ten people when the strike happened. Witnesses reported the group was navigating shallow water, roughly 15 meters from the beach, when the vessel hit the man. He sustained critical head and facial injuries and lost a significant amount of blood.

Emergency medical teams arrived at the shoreline shortly after the collision. They stabilized the man before transport to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for urgent surgical intervention. Despite the severity of the trauma, the victim reportedly stayed conscious through the initial transport.

Police launched an investigation into the circumstances of the vessel's operation immediately following the medical evacuation. Officers arrived at a nearby sailing training facility to interview potential witnesses and secure the scene. They were seen examining diving gear and oxygen tanks left abandoned along the sand.

A 44-year-old female sailing instructor was arrested in connection with the event. Authorities currently hold her on suspicion of endangering the safety of others at sea. The regional crime unit of the Marine Police has assumed responsibility for the ongoing inquiry.

Initial reports from the scene were complicated by separate incidents occurring in the vicinity. Conflicting information about a second victim circulated briefly before investigators clarified that a different individual had suffered minor injuries in an unrelated swimming accident nearby.

The site of the strike is a well-known location for scuba training and recreational diving. It features a shallow, sloping floor that typically attracts beginners and schools. The sudden deterioration of weather on the afternoon of the incident appears to have forced multiple groups back toward land simultaneously.

Marine safety experts point to the necessity of clear communication between vessel operators and those in the water. Protocols demand engines remain in neutral whenever divers are in the immediate vicinity of a boat. The investigation is now focused on whether these fundamental safety measures were ignored during the rush to clear the water.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigators review navigational logs and witness testimony. No further charges have been filed as the medical status of the diver remains the primary concern for responders.
