Populist Nigel Farage to Stand Against ‘Record’ 33 Candidates in UK By-Election He Triggered

Nigel Farage will stand in a snap by-election in Clacton against a “record” slate of 33 fringe candidates, after nominations closed with 34 people on the ballot. Farage quit as MP for Clacton earlier in July and plans to re-stand in an Aug. 13 contest. The mainstream parties have largely boycotted the election, making Count Binface—another well-known novelty candidate—one of Farage’s main rivals. The race is playing out amid fresh scrutiny of Farage’s finances and undisclosed gifts.
