Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia—Public prosecutors confirmed Wednesday afternoon that a 24-year-old SUV driver will face three formal charges in court following a multi-vehicle collision along Jalan Kuching that killed a five-year-old girl.
The fatal crash occurred when a speeding sport utility vehicle rammed into the rear of a slow-moving compact car heading toward Segambut, setting off a chain-reaction pile-up involving six vehicles and a motorcycle. The severe impact caused the compact sedan to spin out across three lanes of traffic before coming to rest against an embankment.
Emergency medical technicians dispatched to the site attempted resuscitation efforts on five-year-old Asiah Ahmad Syahir, who suffered severe head trauma in the rear seat. Doctors at Kuala Lumpur Hospital pronounced the child dead shortly after arrival.
The victim's father sustained arm fractures, while an adjacent motorcyclist caught in the collision was treated for traumatic head and torso injuries. Four other motorists involved in the chain reaction escaped without major physical injuries.
Dang Wangi district traffic officers located the suspect at a private medical facility in Damansara, where he had checked himself in for concussion treatment under police guard. Investigators took the driver into formal custody at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday after doctors cleared him for discharge.
Police finalized the investigation docket and handed the files to the Prosecution Director at 3:00 p.m.. Charges filed under Section 41(1) and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act include causing death by dangerous driving and reckless operation.
Authorities also added charges under Section 52(1) for failing to stop immediately after an accident occurred. Law enforcement officers collected onboard camera footage from secondary vehicles involved to support the prosecution's court filing.
The suspect remains in police lockup overnight prior to his scheduled appearance before the Jalan Duta Traffic Magistrate's Court on Thursday morning.
