Passenger Train Carrying 180 Derails in Northern France, Leaving at Least 44 Injured

LILLE, France — A high-speed regional passenger train carrying approximately 180 passengers derailed in northern France on Saturday morning, September 12, 2026 leaving at least 44 people injured, local authorities and emergency responders confirmed.

The derailment occurred shortly after 8:30 AM local time as the train was traveling through a rural corridor in the Hauts-de-France region. Multiple carriages left the tracks, causing several cars to tip precariously onto their sides near an embankment.

Emergency service units, including over 100 firefighters, specialized search-and-rescue teams, and medical personnel, rapidly deployed to the crash site. First responders established a field hospital near the tracks to triage victims and administer immediate first aid.

According to regional emergency services, four passengers sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to nearby regional trauma centers. The remaining 40 injured individuals received treatment for minor cuts, fractures, and severe shock before being transported to local medical facilities.

"We heard a deafening screeching noise followed by a violent jolt that threw luggage and passengers across the cabin," recounted one survivor who was traveling in one of the middle carriages. "It felt like it lasted forever before the train finally ground to a halt on its side."

The French national railway operator, SNCF, immediately suspended rail traffic along the affected corridor to allow emergency crews unfettered access and to begin a comprehensive technical investigation.

While the precise cause of the derailment remains under investigation, initial reports from transport officials suggest potential factors under review include track infrastructure failure, mechanical failure, or a potential obstruction on the line. Transport ministry officials have arrived on the scene to oversee the initial site inspection and recovery operations.

Regional authorities have opened a dedicated crisis hotline for relatives of the passengers and set up temporary support centers at nearby stations to assist uninjured passengers with ongoing transportation and psychological support. Rail delays and cancellations across the northern network are expected to continue throughout the weekend as investigators secure the scene and heavy machinery moves in to clear the damaged train cars.
