Tragedy in Thailand: Off-Duty Police Officer Fatally Shoots Teacher Wife at Kindergarten

CHONBURI, Thailand — A police officer shot and killed his wife, a teacher at a municipal kindergarten, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, sending shockwaves through the local community. Authorities confirmed that all 44 students and six staff members present at the facility were safely evacuated without physical injury.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. local time at the Nongplalai Municipal Kindergarten in Chonburi province, southeast of Bangkok. According to Sayan Klomaon, chairman of the Nong Pla Lai sub-district council, the suspect—a local police officer—arrived at the school and spoke with his wife outside the classroom before opening fire. Because the confrontation occurred outdoors, none of the young children witnessed the shooting directly.

Following the shooting, the officer fled the scene and returned to his residence in Chonburi. Tactical units quickly surrounded the property to negotiate his surrender while emergency personnel secured the kindergarten grounds.

Chonburi Governor Naris Niramaiwong released a statement confirming the prompt evacuation of 44 children, three teachers, and three staff members, all of whom were safely reunited with their families. The governor ordered the immediate closure of the kindergarten and directed public health officials to provide psychological support services to affected staff and families. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

The fatal shooting has heightened public sensitivity regarding school safety and firearm access across Thailand. The country maintains one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Southeast Asia, and the incident echoes a devastating 2022 daycare attack by a former officer that left 24 children and 12 adults dead. Advocates and regional authorities continue to press for stricter regulations on firearm oversight and domestic intervention protocols within law enforcement ranks.

Community leaders and child protection organizations are now urging national authorities to implement comprehensive mental health screenings and active domestic violence monitoring for all active-duty law enforcement personnel. As grief-stricken parents and residents gather to lay flowers at the school's gates, local officials face growing pressure to guarantee that educational spaces remain secure sanctuaries, completely shielded from outside violence.
