ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Indian Chargé d’Affaires on Saturday to register a formal diplomatic protest after two Pakistani civilians were killed by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) personnel along the international border in the Bedian Sector near Kasur.
According to Pakistani diplomatic officials and local security forces, BSF troops opened fire on three unarmed civilians near the border fence, killing two residents of a nearby village on the spot and injuring a third. Islamabad condemned the incident as a direct violation of established bilateral border protocols and human rights law, categorically rejecting any claims that the men were involved in illicit activity or crossing into Indian territory.
"The BSF personnel resorted to unprovoked lethal force against unarmed civilians," a spokesperson for Pakistan's Foreign Office stated. "Such use of force was wholly unjustified and grossly disproportionate. The Indian side was called upon to conduct an immediate, transparent, and credible investigation into the incident."
Indian media and regional officials offered a contrasting account of the event, reporting that frontier personnel opened fire after detecting suspected infiltrators attempting to cross the border line under cover of darkness. Indian security sources stated that troops issued verbal warnings before resorting to gunfire when the individuals failed to halt.
The deadly shooting along the Punjab frontier—typically a less volatile sector than the militarized Line of Control in disputed Kashmir—comes amid heightened rhetorical and military tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The incident follows recent exchanges of accusations regarding cross-border intelligence operations and military claims along the frontier.
Islamabad urged New Delhi to enforce maximum restraint among its border forces, uphold existing bilateral management agreements, and formally communicate the findings of any official inquiry. Diplomatic channels between the two nations remain open as both governments seek to manage the immediate fallout from the incident.
