Ōtorohanga, New Zealand— One person died and another was injured when a single vehicle crashed on State Highway 3 near Ōtorohanga in the early hours of November 1, 2026, forcing a full closure of the highway.
Police said the call came in just before 2 a.m. The vehicle had left the road and struck a bank on a rural stretch south of the town. Officers arrived to find two occupants trapped. One was already dead. The other was conscious but badly hurt.
Fire and Emergency crews cut the vehicle open. Paramedics worked on the roadside. The injured person was taken by ambulance to Waikato Hospital. Their condition was described as serious but stable by mid-morning.
State Highway 3 is the main freight and commuter link through the King Country. Police closed both lanes for more than four hours. Traffic was diverted through local roads. A long queue built up by sunrise. The Serious Crash Unit arrived at first light to map the scene.
"The vehicle appears to have lost control on a moderate bend. We are looking at speed, possible fatigue, and road conditions," a police spokesperson said in a media briefing near the cordon. The spokesperson said alcohol has not been ruled out but testing is incomplete.
Family notifications were underway Saturday morning. Police have not released age or gender. Neighbors near the crash site said they heard a car pass fast and then a loud impact. One resident said the same bend has seen multiple near-misses this year.
Waikato road policing has stepped up patrols over the holiday weekend. Officers logged 12 impairment stops in the district the night before. This crash brings the regional road toll to 14 for the year.
Investigators photographed tyre marks and debris spread across 30 metres. The vehicle, a late-model ute, was towed for mechanical inspection. Police said the road surface was damp but not flooded.
The highway reopened around 7:30 a.m. after the wreck was cleared. Police are asking for dashcam footage from anyone who traveled State Highway 3 between 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m.
