Three Dead, Including Two Children, After House Fire In Chicago, Fire Department Launches Investigation Into Cause

Chicago, United States— A house fire tore through a home in Chicago on November 1, 2026, killing three people including two children who were trapped inside on the second floor.

The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. on the South Side, in the Englewood neighborhood. Neighbors called 911 after seeing flames from the front porch. The house, a two-story wood-frame structure, was fully involved when firefighters arrived.

Fire crews found heavy smoke and fire blocking the main stairway. They entered through windows with ladders. Three victims were found upstairs, unconscious. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other residents escaped through a rear door with minor burns.

"The fire moved fast through the old wood structure. We had reports of children trapped. Crews made an aggressive interior search but conditions were extreme," a Chicago Fire Department battalion chief said at the scene. He said no working smoke detectors were found.

The victims were identified by family as a mother in her 30s and her two children, ages 7 and 9. Their names have not been officially released. Relatives gathered outside the cordon, crying and holding each other.

Chicago has seen a rise in fatal house fires in older neighborhoods. Many homes have outdated wiring, space heaters, and lack smoke alarms. The fire department distributed free alarms last year but coverage remains low in some areas.

Investigators said the fire likely started in the living room on the first floor. An electrical fault and a space heater are being examined as possible causes. The house had no sprinkler system. The structure is considered a total loss.

The American Red Cross provided shelter to surviving family members. The city’s trauma support team was dispatched to the block. A vigil was planned for Saturday evening.

Neighbors said the family had lived in the house for more than five years. One neighbor said she heard screams and tried to help but smoke was too thick. Another said he tried to break a window with a chair.

The Cook County Medical Examiner will conduct autopsies. The fire department's Office of Fire Investigation will release a full report within 10 days. Officials urged residents to check smoke detectors and avoid overloaded power strips.

The house remains cordoned off as evidence is collected.
