One Canadian Tests Positive for Hantavirus, BC Officials Say

As of May 16, 2026, health authorities in British Columbia have confirmed that one Canadian has tested "presumptive positive" for hantavirus. This individual was part of a group of four Canadians isolating on Vancouver Island after being aboard the MV Hondius, a luxury cruise ship where an outbreak of the Andes strain of the virus was reported.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, the provincial health officer, provided an update, stating that the patient developed mild symptoms, including a headache and fever, and was tested at a hospital in Victoria. The result came in late Friday, leading to rigorous monitoring and adherence to health protocols.

Of the remaining passengers, another individual presented minor symptoms but tested negative. The couple involved, who are in their 70s and from the Yukon, was flown to B.C. after disembarking the cruise, which had been on a polar expedition since April 1, 2026.

Samples from the patient have been sent to the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg for confirmation, with results expected soon. Dr. Henry reassured the public that the overall risk to the general population remains low, emphasizing that infection control measures were in place from the moment the passengers entered British Columbia.

Notably, the hantavirus is usually spread by rodents, and while severe illness can occur, it is not considered to have pandemic potential. Health officials are monitoring the situation closely, keeping the public informed about any developments regarding the virus and its transmission risks.
