New Virus Detected in Swiss Cattle as Dairy Farms Report Mystery Illness

Switzerland’s Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office says the mystery illness affecting dairy cows has been linked to a previously unknown orthobunyavirus of the Simbu group. The virus was detected in samples from acutely ill animals showing fever, diarrhea, and reduced milk production. Investigators say genetic testing is ongoing to identify the exact virus, which is typically spread by biting midges. Authorities stress there is currently no evidence of risk from drinking milk.
