The public helped find the van, and the courts will do the rest

There is a particular relief that arrives when a vehicle is found, a quiet resolution that does not undo the loss but closes one door in an investigation that has many. On Tuesday, York Regional Police announced that the white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van sought in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Vaughan earlier this month had been located. The vehicle, a 2020 to 2022 model, was recovered a day after the man accused of driving it made his first court appearance.

The collision occurred on the evening of October 4, when a sixty-year-old woman was walking northbound on Pine Valley Drive from Major Mackenzie Drive. She was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound that fled the scene. Her body was found days later by a passerby at the side of the road. She was later identified as Marietta Esguerra of Richmond Hill, a live-in caregiver . Police confirmed that debris found at the scene belonged to a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and security video captured the van turning into a subdivision near Balantyne Road and Pine Valley Drive shortly after the time of the collision .

On October 16, investigators charged Kamel Hazime, forty-one, of Vaughan, with failure to stop after an accident resulting in death . The vehicle remained outstanding at that time, and police issued a public appeal warning that anyone who assisted by concealing, repairing, or altering the van could face criminal charges. They urged mechanics and body shop operators who had worked on a white Sprinter matching the description to stop immediately and contact the Major Collision Investigation Unit . On Tuesday, police confirmed the van had been located the previous day, thanking the public for information that assisted the investigation .

The investigation is not closed. Police have not said where the vehicle was found or what condition it was in, and the circumstances that led to the collision remain under examination. The charge against Hazime is one count of failure to stop, a serious offense that carries significant penalties but does not address the question of why the collision happened in the first place. That question, and whatever answer the investigation produces, will unfold in the courts over the coming months.

For the family of Marietta Esguerra, the recovery of the van is a procedural milestone, not a resolution. She was a caregiver, a woman who spent her working life caring for others, and she died on a roadside after being struck by a driver who did not stop. The vehicle that struck her is now in police custody. The man accused of driving it has been charged. What remains is the grief, the legal process, and the slow work of a case moving through a system that measures time in court dates and adjournments.

There is no larger lesson in this story, no policy prescription that can be extracted from a single death on a suburban road. There is only the fact of a woman who is gone, a community that noticed, and an investigation that followed the evidence from a piece of debris to a vehicle to a charge. The van has been found. The rest is what the courts will decide.
