McKinsey Challenges the Pessimism Surrounding the Future

Pessimism about the future has become increasingly common, particularly among younger generations worried about economic opportunity and social stability. McKinsey Global Institute is pushing back against that narrative with a broader look at humanity's historical progress. The organisation argues that the data shows enormous progress over the past century, despite widespread pessimism about what lies ahead. The screenshot notes that fewer than one in ten young people in the United States believe the next generation will have a better future. The contrast is striking. Over the past hundred years, life expectancy, technological capabilities, communications, transportation and access to information have changed dramatically. Many technologies that once appeared extraordinary have become ordinary parts of everyday life. Yet economic progress does not automatically translate into optimism. People can judge their future based on housing costs, wages, employment prospects, debt, political instability and the cost of living. Even when national indicators improve, individuals may feel that opportunities are becoming harder to obtain. This creates a gap between macroeconomic progress and personal experience. Artificial intelligence adds another layer to the debate. The technology could increase productivity and create new industries, but it also raises concerns about job displacement and changing skill requirements. The challenge for governments and businesses is therefore to ensure that technological progress translates into broad-based opportunity. Education will be central. Workers need opportunities to acquire new skills as technology changes the nature of employment. Young people also need confidence that economic systems will allow them to participate in future growth rather than simply observe it. The McKinsey argument does not mean that every future trend will be positive. Economic crises, wars, climate risks and technological disruptions remain real challenges. Instead, the historical evidence suggests that pessimism should be tested against measurable outcomes. Humanity has repeatedly adapted to technologies that once seemed disruptive or frightening. The next challenge is ensuring that the benefits of future innovation are distributed widely enough for optimism to become credible again.
