Lithuania Sends Troops to Kaliningrad Border Amid Fears of Russian Deserters

Lithuania has deployed about 100 troops to patrol its border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region, amid concerns that Russian men may try to enter the country to evade mobilization. The deployment near Vištytis is expected to continue until mid-November. Authorities have increased monitoring on land, water and in the air, nearly doubling patrol coverage along the roughly 300-kilometer border. Officials say the move is precautionary and does not restrict daily life in nearby communities. Two Russian citizens crossed into Lithuania over a frozen lake earlier this year.
