ROME — Riot police deployed tear gas and water cannons in the Italian capital as violent clashes erupted during widespread demonstrations. The unrest in Rome is part of a broader wave of protests sweeping major cities across Italy, driven by rising public anger over soaring living costs, stagnant wages, and controversial government spending policies.
The situation in Rome turned volatile when groups of demonstrators attempted to march toward the Prime Minister's official office. Security forces blocked key thoroughfares near Piazza della Repubblica and the Quirinale palace using armored vehicles and barricades.
Tensions escalated as some protesters pelted police lines with bottles and firecrackers. In response, riot police launched tear gas canisters and unleashed high-pressure water cannons to disperse the crowd and push back demonstrators. In a separate breach, a group of protesters attempted to force their way into the iconic Colosseum before being contained by security forces.
The unrest was not confined to the capital, as similar high-tension confrontations flared up across northern and central Italy. In Turin, protesters clashed directly with police in the historic center by throwing bottles and fireworks, prompting officers to respond with baton charges and tear gas, which left multiple people injured and led to hundreds of identification checks.
Meanwhile, demonstrators in Bologna erected makeshift barricades, set trash bins ablaze, and hurled projectiles at law enforcement, who utilized batons, tear gas, and water cannons to clear the streets. To prevent further escalation in Florence and Milan, authorities deployed heavy police cordons to block marchers from entering luxury shopping districts and sensitive city centers.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi stated that security forces had been heavily reinforced across sensitive urban areas following earlier rounds of unrest. Law enforcement agencies conducted nationwide search operations targeting individuals suspected of planning coordinated attacks against police and municipal infrastructure.
While student leaders and peaceful organizers called for calm and sought to distance them from violent fringe factions, authorities remain on high alert as social and economic grievances continue to fuel nationwide demonstrations.
