Krakow Flood Chaos: Heavy Autumn Rainstorms Inundate Southern Suburbs, One Pedestrian Drowned Homes Damaged

Kraków, Poland— Flash flooding caused by heavy autumn rainstorms inundated southern suburbs of Kraków on October 20, drowning one pedestrian and damaging homes after rivers and drainage channels overflowed.

The rain began early morning and intensified by noon. More than 70 millimeters fell in four hours over the Swoszowice, Kurdwanów, and Wróblowice districts. The Wilga River, normally a small stream, burst its banks. Water poured into basements and ground-floor apartments. Cars were submerged up to their windows. One underpass filled completely within 15 minutes.

The victim, a 68-year-old man, was found near an underpass in the Kurdwanów area. Police said he was trying to cross a flooded pedestrian crossing when he was swept off his feet. The water was knee-deep but fast-moving. He was carried into a drainage ditch. Rescue teams recovered his body an hour later. Paramedics attempted resuscitation but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters carried out more than 120 interventions across southern Kraków. They pumped water from homes and rescued residents trapped in basements. In Swoszowice, 12 families were evacuated after water reached first-floor windows. One resident said, "The water came from everywhere - from the street, from the garden, from the drains. In 10 minutes we had 50 centimeters in the living room."

The city's infrastructure struggled. Storm drains, clogged with autumn leaves, could not cope. Kraków's mayor said the city's drainage system is outdated and designed for less intense rainfall. Climate experts said autumn storms in Poland are becoming heavier and more sudden. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management had issued an orange alert for heavy rain, but the intensity in southern Kraków exceeded forecasts.

Power was cut in several streets as a precaution. Schools in affected areas closed early. Trams on lines 6 and 24 were suspended after tracks were flooded. The city opened a crisis center and provided sandbags to residents. Insurance companies said they have received dozens of claims for flooded homes and cars.

By evening, rain had eased and water began to recede, leaving mud and debris. Residents shoveled mud from homes. The city said damage assessment will start October 21. The victim's family has been notified. No other casualties have been reported.
