Katowice Mine Disaster: Methane Gas Explosion Traps Six Workers, Two Dead, Rescue Underway

Katowice, Poland— A methane gas explosion at a coal mine in Katowice trapped six workers and left two dead on October 20, after gas ignited deep underground in one of Poland's largest hard coal mines.

The explosion occurred at around 6 a.m. at the Murcki-Staszic mine, operated by Polska Grupa Górnicza. Eight miners were working at a depth of about 900 meters when methane accumulated in a longwall and ignited. The blast destroyed ventilation and filled tunnels with smoke and carbon monoxide. Two miners died instantly. Six others were trapped behind collapsed supports.

Rescue teams from the Central Mine Rescue Station in Bytom were deployed. They entered with breathing apparatus and gas detectors. Methane levels remained dangerously high, preventing immediate entry to the affected zone. By afternoon, rescuers had established contact with two of the trapped miners via radio. Their condition is unknown. The other four remain unaccounted for. Families gathered at the mine gate, waiting for news.

Poland relies heavily on coal, despite EU pressure to phase it out. The Silesia region around Katowice has dozens of deep, gassy mines. Methane explosions are a constant risk. This mine has had three methane incidents in the past two years, including one that injured four workers last November. The State Mining Authority said the mine had been cited for inadequate ventilation but was allowed to continue operating.

The two dead miners, aged 36 and 44, were experienced workers. Their bodies were recovered by midday and taken to a hospital morgue in Katowice. The mine's management said it is cooperating with investigators and that production at the affected longwall has been halted. A spokesperson said, "Our priority is the rescue of our colleagues." The union said safety warnings were ignored.

President and Prime Minister issued statements expressing condolences and promising support for families. The Minister of Climate and Environment, who oversees mining, said an independent commission will investigate the cause. Opposition politicians said the government continues to sacrifice safety for coal output. Environmental groups said the disaster shows the need to accelerate the exit from coal.

Rescue operations are expected to continue through the night. Officials said the chance of finding the six trapped alive depends on whether ventilation can be restored quickly. Oxygen is limited. The mine remains closed. No timeline has been given for rescue completion.
