Rio de Janeiro, Brazil— A bank heist in Rio de Janeiro turned into a deadly hostage stand-off on October 20, leaving three people dead, including one civilian, after police exchanged gunfire with armed robbers inside a downtown branch.
The robbery began at around 10 a.m. in the Centro district. Four men entered a bank branch armed with pistols and rifles. They intended to take cash from the vault, but police on routine patrol were alerted by a silent alarm. Patrol cars blocked the exits. The robbers then took three people hostage inside: two bank employees and a customer.
Negotiations lasted more than two hours. The BOPE tactical unit was deployed. Officers tried to establish contact. The gunmen demanded a getaway car. Police refused. At around 12:30 p.m., gunfire erupted inside. Police said the robbers began threatening to execute hostages. Officers entered. A shootout followed in the lobby. When it ended, three people were dead.
Police said the dead include one civilian hostage, a 38-year-old woman who was a bank customer, and two of the robbers. The other two robbers were wounded and arrested. The two other hostages were rescued alive, one with a gunshot wound to the leg. They were taken to Souza Aguiar Hospital. A police spokesperson said, "The robbers used hostages as shields. We had no choice but to intervene."
The bank, located on a busy commercial street, was surrounded by hundreds of onlookers. Videos posted on social media showed police crouched behind cars, rifles pointed at the entrance. Shots echoed between buildings. Workers in nearby offices were told to stay away from windows. Traffic was diverted for blocks.
Bank robberies with hostages have increased in Rio this year. Security experts link the rise to economic pressure and the proliferation of weapons from drug gangs. Bank branches in Centro have minimal security, often just one unarmed guard. The banking union said it has warned about lack of protection for years. "Employees are left defenseless," said a union representative.
The governor of Rio de Janeiro state said the police response followed protocol and that the civilian death will be investigated. The civil police opened an inquiry into the heist and whether inside information was involved. The bank said it will provide assistance to families and employees.
The branch remains closed. Forensic teams are still inside. Bullet holes mark the glass doors. The investigation continues.
