It began in Brighton East and ended in the middle of the freeway.

There are mornings that begin in the quiet of suburban streets and end in the roar of a freeway brought to a standstill—a chain of events that unfolds with the logic of a crime spree but the chaos of a pursuit. On Tuesday, across Melbourne's south-east, that chain stretched from Brighton East to the Monash Freeway, and when it ended, five people had been charged and a city had watched the drama unfold from helicopters overhead.

Police allege that about 5:30 a.m., a home on Clonaig Street in Brighton East was broken into, and two vehicles—a Nissan Patrol and an Audi SQ5—were stolen. A couple and their infant were home at the time; they told police they were woken by the sound of banging before the intruders fled .

The stolen vehicles were allegedly used in a second aggravated burglary in Hampton Park about 7:45 a.m. No one was injured in either incident .

A short time later, the Nissan Patrol was spotted being driven erratically in Doveton. Police pursued the vehicle through multiple eastern and south-eastern suburbs, with the Air Wing tracking from above. The chase continued onto EastLink and then the Monash Freeway .

Just after midday, specialist police intercepted the Nissan near Chadstone. More than a dozen officers, many in tactical gear, swarmed the vehicle. All five outbound lanes of the freeway were closed, bringing traffic to a standstill .

Three 16-year-old boys, a 17-year-old, and a 19-year-old and 20-year-old man were arrested at the scene . They have been charged with various offences, including aggravated burglary, car theft, and armed robbery . One 16-year-old was also charged with intentional aggravated exposure of an emergency worker to risk by driving, reckless conduct endangering life, and unlicensed driving. Another 16-year-old was charged with committing an offence while on bail .

The second stolen vehicle, the Audi, was recovered in Endeavour Hills following a collision .

The investigation is ongoing, and the freeway reopened by early afternoon.
