In Melbourne this week, that unsettling logic unfolded twice in a single night, as arsonists struck on opposite sides of the city and left investigators piecing together what had happened and why.

Just after 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday, a vehicle was reversed into a closed fruit and vegetable shop on Watton Street in Werribee. A male was seen attempting to set the vehicle alight. He failed to ignite either the car or the store, and there was no one inside at the time. He fled in a second vehicle .

Less than two hours later, on Greythorn Road in Balwyn North, two cars were set alight about 1 a.m. Wednesday. This time, the fire spread. Flames reached a nearby home, where one occupant fled without injury .

Victoria Police are investigating both incidents as arson. No arrests have been made, and the investigations remain ongoing .

The two events—one failed, one destructive—unfolded in the quiet hours when most of the city was asleep. The fruit shop, closed for the night, was spared. The home in Balwyn North was not. What connects them, if anything, is not yet clear. Police have not suggested a link between the two scenes.

For residents of Werribee and Balwyn North, the night brought a different kind of disruption: the sound of sirens, the smell of smoke, and the knowledge that someone had chosen to set fire to the places where people live and work.
