Informal Poll Shows Costa Rica’s Grynspan Ahead in Race to Be Next UN Chief

An informal first straw poll by the UN Security Council showed former Costa Rican vice president Rebeca Grynspan as the early frontrunner for the next UN secretary-general. In the non-binding “encourage” vote, she led with 10 supportive votes, ahead of Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett with nine and Argentina’s Rafael Grossi with seven, diplomats told Reuters. Multiple rounds are expected, with final selection potentially concluding in late September or early October as candidates build support behind closed doors.
