THANE CITY, Maharashtra — A massive fire erupted on a busy roadside adjacent to a local school in Thane on Tuesday afternoon, October 13, 2026 sending dense plumes of black smoke into the air and triggering widespread panic among residents and commuters. A total of 23 vehicles parked along the stretch were completely gutted in the blaze before emergency services brought the situation under control.
The incident occurred during peak daytime hours along a major road section near the school premises. According to eyewitnesses, the fire initially broke out in dry vegetation and roadside garbage before rapidly expanding toward parked vehicles. Fueled by strong winds and hot weather conditions, the flames engulfed rows of two-wheelers and four-wheelers within minutes.
Loud popping sounds from exploding tires and fuel tanks escalated fear in the neighborhood, prompting swift action from nearby authorities and residents.
"We saw thick black smoke rising near the school boundaries and immediately alerted the fire department. Thankfully, the flames were kept from spreading directly into the school campus," said a local resident who witnessed the incident.
Upon receiving emergency calls, local police units and multiple fire tenders from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) rushed to the spot. Firefighters fought the aggressive blaze for nearly an hour before successfully preventing it from reaching neighboring residential buildings and the school structure.
Preliminary assessments confirmed that 23 vehicles—including motorbikes, scooters, and parked cars—were completely burnt down in the blaze. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported, as swift action by bystanders and school officials ensured the immediate area was safely evacuated.
While the official cause of the fire remains under investigation, preliminary reports suspect an open garbage burn or a discarded lit cigarette near dry grass may have ignited the flames. Local police have cordoned off the area to conduct a forensic inspection and review nearby CCTV footage.
Municipal authorities have reiterated warnings against illegal roadside parking and open dumping of combustible waste near educational institutions and public roadways.
