Inferno Claims Piece of Parisian History: 411-Year-Old Marché des Enfants Rouges Destroyed in Early-Morning Blaze

PARIS — A devastating early-morning fire swept through the historic Marché des Enfants Rouges in the Marais district, destroying the French capital’s oldest covered food market and leaving local shopkeepers and residents in shock.

The blaze broke out around 4:15 AM along Rue de Bretagne. Emergency services responded quickly, but the inferno rapidly engulfed the wooden stalls and food counters beneath the historic structure. By morning, the covered hall had been completely burnt out, causing sections of its metallic frame to collapse inward.

Over 100 firefighters fought the aggressive flames to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjacent residential buildings in the densely built-up 3rd arrondissement.

According to Parisian emergency officials, the fire was contained strictly to the market site, protecting neighboring housing blocks. One firefighter suffered a minor medical episode during the operation, but no other injuries or fatalities were reported.

While the iconic wrought-iron entrance gate managed to survive the high heat, local officials confirmed that the interior was entirely destroyed.

"Nothing remains of the covered market. The metal structure has partially collapsed inside, but our teams managed to keep neighboring homes safe," stated Lieutenant Colonel Pierre de Bouvier at the scene.

Founded in 1615 under King Louis XIII, the Marché des Enfants Rouges was designated a official historic monument in 1982. Its name originates from a 16th-century nearby orphanage whose young residents wore red clothing donated by Christian charities.

For generations, the venue served as a vibrant culinary crossroad, housing traditional cheese mongers, florists, bakeries, and international street-food stalls beloved by locals and international visitors alike. Local business owners and residents gathered behind police cordons throughout the morning as firefighter's sprayed cooling foam over the smoking rubble.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire, which remains unknown.

City officials pledged swift economic support for the dozens of affected merchants and stall owners, promising to arrange temporary commercial spaces in the Marais district so vendors can resume their livelihoods as soon as possible.
