Gorzów Wielkopolski, Poland— A high-speed vehicle collision following an illegal street race in Gorzów Wielkopolski left one pedestrian dead on October 20, after two cars racing through the city center lost control and struck a person crossing the road.
The crash happened at around 11 p.m. on Sikorskiego Street, a wide boulevard popular with street racers at night. Two modified BMWs were racing side by side, reaching speeds estimated at over 150 kilometers per hour in a 50 zone. One car clipped the other. Both spun. One mounted the sidewalk and hit a 29-year-old pedestrian who was walking home from work. The man died at the scene.
Police said the drivers fled immediately after the crash, abandoning one vehicle. The second car was found an hour later in a nearby parking lot, damaged. Witnesses said they heard engines roaring, then a loud crash. "We see races here every weekend," said a resident who lives above a shop. "We called police many times. Tonight someone died."
Gorzów Wielkopolski, like many Polish cities, has seen a rise in illegal street racing. Social media groups organize races late at night, sharing locations minutes before. Cars are often modified and unregistered. Police lack resources to patrol every hotspot. A traffic officer said the city has only two patrol cars dedicated to speeding at night.
The victim was a local worker at a nearby factory. His family has been notified. The mayor's office said it will install speed cameras and concrete barriers on Sikorskiego Street, measures residents have demanded for months. The city council held an emergency meeting this morning. One councilor said, "We allowed this street to become a racetrack. Now we have a death."
Police seized both vehicles and are reviewing CCTV and dashcam footage. One driver, aged 21, has been identified and is wanted. The second driver, aged 23, surrendered at a police station this morning with a lawyer. Both face charges of causing a fatal accident, participating in an illegal race, and fleeing the scene. If convicted, they face up to eight years in prison.
The accident sparked outrage in the city. Hundreds of residents signed an online petition demanding stricter penalties for street racing. A vigil is planned tonight at the crash site. Police said they will increase night patrols and use drones to monitor racing hotspots.
