OSTROŁĘKA, Poland — A terrifying wave of violence struck a vocational high school in northeastern Poland on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 when a knife-wielding attacker went on a stabbing rampage, leaving at least eight people injured, including five students.
The assault took place at Vocational School Complex No. 4 in Ostrołęka, sending shockwaves through the local community as students and teachers fled the building in terror.
According to witnesses and local authorities, the assailant—identified as a 19-year-old student enrolled at the school—began attacking individuals inside the facility around mid-morning. Panic quickly spread through the corridors as teachers tried to secure classrooms while panicked students sought safety.
Emergency services, including police units, fire brigades, and medical personnel, rushed to the scene immediately following frantic distress calls from staff members. First responders provided emergency care on site before transporting all eight victims—comprising five teenagers under 18 and three adults, including a teacher—to the Mazovian Specialist Hospital in Ostrołęka. At least two of the injured were reported to be in serious condition.
Following the violent rampage, the suspect fled the school grounds on foot, prompting a swift multi-agency police operation to secure the surrounding area. Authorities located and detained the 19-year-old approximately one kilometer from the school near the city beach along the riverbank shortly after noon. Police confirmed that the suspect sustained injuries during his apprehension and was placed under police guard.
Ostrołęka Mayor Paweł Niewiadomski released a statement confirming that the immediate threat had been contained, urging students, parents, and school staff to follow the guidance of emergency personnel. Regional prosecutors and forensic investigators have launched a formal inquiry to determine the motive behind the assault, while local municipal leaders have ordered counseling services and psychological support for students and families affected by the tragedy.
In the wake of the violent assault, regional education officials and national ministry representatives have begun reviewing security protocols and safety measures across all educational institutions in the region. Authorities announced plans to conduct comprehensive risk assessments and strengthen mental health evaluation frameworks within schools, aiming to identify early warning signs and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
