He Was Somewhere, and No One Knew Where

There are escapes that unfold in darkness and silence, and then there is the slow, public unraveling that follows. Jacob Allen Morley, 28, was discovered missing from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee, around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. Security footage showed him breaching the perimeter fence and fleeing in his prison uniform. By Monday, he had stolen a work truck. By Wednesday, that truck had been found in Marion, Illinois, a hundred miles north, and the reward for his capture had grown from $2,500 to $15,000.

The facts of Morley's case are not complicated. He was convicted of first-degree murder in 2025 for killing his co-worker, Cody Birchfield, in 2022. Birchfield had been reported missing in February of that year. His body was found in a metal box under Morley's home in March. Morley was also convicted of aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, and evading arrest . He was serving a life sentence with a release date in 2083. His supervision level at the prison was listed as "low" .

The escape itself raises questions that the Tennessee Department of Correction has not yet answered. How does a man serving life for murder breach a perimeter fence without detection? The department has said the breach is under investigation and has released little else. What is known is that Morley stole a white 2008 Ford F-350 pickup truck from a nearby farm shortly after his escape, and that the truck was found behind a business in Marion, Illinois, early Tuesday . Marion Police Chief David Fitts said there was no evidence around the truck and no confirmed sightings of Morley. "There's really nowhere for him to go here where he wouldn't be recognized," Fitts said. "His face is all over the news" .

For Birchfield's family, the escape has reopened a wound that had barely begun to close. Carrie Norman, Birchfield's sister, told NBC News that "it feels like a scary movie." The family, she said, "have to go back through the experience—once again. Once again, because you don't know where he's at, but you know what he's capable of" . The phrase is simple and devastating. They know what he is capable of. That knowledge is the weight they carry, and the escape has made it heavier.

The manhunt now involves local, state, and federal agencies. The Tennessee Highway Patrol has deployed aircraft and troopers. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has added Morley to its Most Wanted list. The U.S. Marshals Service has contributed to the reward. Residents near the prison have been asked to review doorbell cameras and trail cameras, to check their property for anything unusual . The instructions are the ordinary mechanics of a search, but they carry an extraordinary charge: a man who killed once is somewhere, and no one knows where.

Fitts, the Marion police chief, offered a caution that reflects the stakes. "Don't approach him. Call 911. We'll handle it," he said . The warning is standard, but in this case it is not boilerplate. Morley was convicted of shooting Birchfield in the back of the head. He is described as 5-foot-11 and 240 pounds . The people who might see him are not law enforcement officers. They are residents, commuters, people going about their days. The instruction to call rather than confront is an acknowledgment that the danger is real.

The search continues. The truck has been found, but the man has not. The reward has grown, but the tips have not yet produced an arrest. For the family in Tennessee, the wait is a return to a fear they thought they had left behind. For the communities along the route from Tiptonville to Marion, the question is whether the man in the prison uniform is still nearby, or whether he has already moved on. The answer, for now, is unknown.
