A hush filled airport terminals on Monday as travelers watched screens flicker with delayed departure times. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, more than 1,660 flights across the United States were delayed on Monday, tied to rising absences among air traffic controllers. This disruption follows a sharply worse day on Sunday, when over 8,600 flights were delayed amid controller shortages at multiple locations.

The trouble arises in part because the country is in the 27th day of a federal government shutdown, during which thousands of essential aviation workers — including about 13,000 air traffic controllers — are working without a current paycheck. The FAA reported staffing “triggers” — defined as short-staff issues significant enough to force delay programs — at many control facilities.

Major airports have already been flagged: the Southeast U.S. and the busy Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey were among the hardest hit. At Los Angeles International Airport, a ground-delay program was issued as staffing constraints mounted.

In many cases the root cause is not weather or equipment trouble but the simple fact that controllers are fatigued, unpaid and over-worked. Officials say that while only about 5 % of delays in normal times are due to staffing, recent days have seen that number rise into the dozens of percent.

For passengers the impact is real: longer waits, cascading schedule disruptions, missed connections, and growing frustration. The airlines themselves are under mounting pressure to manage both logistics and customer relations.
